The Dubai Project Has Started: Crafting a Custom Hinoki Cypress Low Table

Hinoki cypress slabs selected for a custom low table project in Dubai

We are proud to announce that our Dubai project is officially underway. At the heart of this commission is a custom-designed low table crafted from carefully selected Hinoki cypress slabs—showcasing the timeless beauty of traditional Japanese wood craftsmanship.

Why Choose Hinoki Cypress for High-End Projects?:

Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is a prized softwood native to Japan, known for its straight grain, gentle scent, and excellent resistance to moisture. These qualities make it a favorite among architects, interior designers, and luxury furniture makers alike.

When selecting materials for refined interiors—especially in hospitality and residential spaces—Hinoki wood offers a rare combination of elegance, lightness, and durability. Its subtle color tones and fine texture elevate any design.

The Design Brief — A 3.2 Meter Hinoki Low Table:

For this project, we received a special request: to build a large Hinoki wood low table measuring 3,200mm by 1,200mm. The size and scale alone made it a challenge, but the aesthetic demands made it a true test of craftsmanship.

From roughly eight slabs of Hinoki cypress lumber, we selected the three that demonstrated the most harmony in grain, tone, and proportion. Each slab was inspected not just for surface quality, but for how it would respond to shaping, planing, and final finishing.

Hinoki Lumber Selection: A Balance of Grain, Color, and Character:

Choosing the right Hinoki slabs is both science and art. The process includes:

  • Evaluating the grain pattern and knot structure
  • Matching color consistency across the final table surface
  • Accounting for movement that may occur after surface planing
  • Ensuring overall structural balance and visual cohesion

As Hinoki wood is typically left unpainted or finished with a clear coating, every natural characteristic remains visible—making precision selection even more crucial.

Drying, Processing, and Final Assembly:

Once the slabs were selected and the live edges trimmed, we arranged them into a rough layout and placed them back into a climate-controlled drying room. This resting period allows the wood to stabilize before undergoing final milling, jointing, and surface treatment.
